French and Indian War 09/17/07

French and English hate each other

Many wars, 1600's to mid 1700's

1754-63 French and Indian War

Primarily in Ohio Valley

Pennsylvania to Wisconson

Great trade routes with rivers

Whoever controls trade routes controls money

Beaver pelts traded a lot

Westward Colonists and Indians and French Trappers resided there

Phase 1:1754-56: Colonists vs. French and Indians (Huron)

Colonists had Iroquois Indians on their side

Mohawks, Senecas, Oneidas and the Onedagas friends of Indians

Huron Chief Pontiac

George Washington, surveyor, 21, wants to go out into the Frontier

Colonists didn't like the war. No interest in Frontier.

England vs. France, settlers want stay out.

British demand colonies fight

Show up in Boston harbors and draft settlers

Made settlers unhappy with British

Colonial war until:

Phase 2: 1756-63: Seven Years War

When Britain gets involved.

Scalping used by Europeans to prove Indians had killed enemy

Britain demands colonists house British troops

Combined with Mercantilism, colonists are very unhappy with British

Rules of contest

Lined both armies up and fired at each other.

Didn't change until Civil War

Tactics change during F+I War, guerilla warfare.

Consider brutal tactics

William Pitt, war hero, American, joins Parliament, negotiates Treaty of Paris (1763, Fall of Quebec)

France loses and is knocked out of America

French keep two islands a parts of Florida

British have a high debt

Colonists will be taxed highly to pay for war

War directly caused the Revolutionary War

Colonists want representation

One third wanted to leave England, one third were Torries, one third were moderates

Social results

People started thinking of themselves as Americans

Many colonists were born in America, no affiliation with Britain

British viewed America as an undisciplined, spoiled child

France provides money for America to fight British

Manifest Destiny

God given right to move westward
